In
2008 I was introduced to Biomimicry at the GreenBuild conference, when closing
speakers E.O. Wilson and Janine Benyus discussed nature's role in our society
and the effectiveness of mimicking how nature works. This is the essence
of Biomimicry, seeking more sustainable solutions of emulating nature through
the study of how it works. Janine introduced AskNature.org, an open source
website where scientist, companies and designers can collaborate through
sharing information based on their unique experience, to come up with solutions
that mimic nature. This was an eye opening moment where people
from around the world can work on solutions which
are derived from living organisms performing the same tasks
in a more sustainable way.
